Five Best Authentic Hawaiian Dishes You Can’t Miss
Hawaiian Food is one of the best when it comes to uniqueness and exceptional favors—this is what Aquaman star Jason Momoa and celebrated chef Gordon Ramsay have said in their YouTube videos.
And, honestly, we couldn’t more!
What sets Hawaiian food apart is its emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the spirit of Aloha that goes into every meal. It all started during Ancient Hawaii times (300 AD to 1778) when Polynesian Voyagers brought plants and animals to the islands of Hawaii. Over the next years, local Hawaiians started raising taro for poi and planting coconuts, sweet potatoes & sugarcane. Moreover, they started cooking meat and fish in earth ovens. Altogether, this served as a foundational step for developing unique Hawaiian food. During the 1780s, European and American missionaries arrived in Hawaii, leading to Hawaiian food’s evolution.
Between 1850 and 1940, when labor demand in Hawaii was at its peak, immigrant workers from Korea, China, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Japan came to the island. Ultimately, all these cultures made a huge impact on all sectors of Hawaii, including food.
This is why we have written in the introduction about Hawaiian food being diverse and multi-cultural.
Let’s keep this history aside and introduce you to the five top authentic Hawaiian dishes.
1. SPAM
SPAM—precooked meat (primarily made from pork)—is of the iconic authentic Hawaiian dishes. The type of SPAM you’ll get on Maui is nothing like anywhere else in the world. This famous dish was introduced in Hawaii by American soldiers. Due to its long shelf life and affordability, SPAM became a favorite local dish during the World War.
Do you know that Maui is unofficially known as ‘The Land of SPAM’ all across the globe?
You may wonder, what is the reason behind it? Is SPAM on Maui really this good, or is there another reason?
Well, it’s somewhere in between. SPAM is a famous dish in various countries, but it is available there in just one basic flavor. Unlike these countries, Maui provides wide flavors of SPAM. You can get black pepper SPAM, garlic SPAM, cheese SPAM, Jalapeno SPAM, Filipino Sausage SPAM & more.
2. Poke
Poke is Maui’s most common, popular, basic but evergreen dish. It is everywhere. You can even get this at the liquor store. This may sound weird! But it is what it is.
Poke is an authentic Hawaiian dish of diced raw fish tossed in soy sauce with green Maui onions. It is typically served as an appetizer in most restaurants.
Poke can be made of various commonly caught fish, such as Albacore Tuna, Bigeye Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, & Yellowfin Tuna. According to the FDA, various commercially caught local fishes can be eaten raw. Thus, it’s completely safe to eat Poke. Believe us, the moment you eat Poke for the first time, it’ll surely make you crazy after it.
3. Loco Moco
A Loco Moco is more than just a dish for Hawaiians; it’s a tradition and a symbol of their identity. According to historical evidence, Loco Moco was created at the Lincoln Grill restaurants in Hilo, Big Island, in 1949 by Richard Inouye and his wife to feed hungry teenagers of Lincoln Wreckers Sports Club. Teenagers were demanding unique dishes (other than a regular sandwich). In order to fulfill the request of teenagers, Richard and his wife, Nancy, came up with a recipe that would later be called Loco Moco.
Loco Moco is a simple and quick-served recipe. It consists of white rice topped with a seasoned hamburger patty, rich brown gravy poured over the other components, and a fried egg on top.
Loco Moco is a favorite at local diners, plate lunch spots, and even high-end restaurants. That’s why, it is counted among the top authentic Hawaiian dishes.
4. Malasadas
Next up—we’ve got Malasadas. These delightful Portuguese party-like deep-fried doughnuts have a crisp, golden-brown exterior and a soft, fluffy interior, often coated in sugar.
Malasadas were first introduced to Hawaii in the late 19th century by Portuguese immigrants from the Madeira and Azores Islands. That’s why they are very similar to another traditional Portuguese patty, Filhós. The only difference between these two patties is that traditional Portuguese Filhós do not have any filling, while Hawaiian Malasadas are filled with smaller filling.
It should be noted that ‘Malasadas is also spelled as ‘Malassadas.’ So, don’t get confused between both these two terms.
In Hawaii, Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) is known as ‘Malasada Day’. Due to this, many people eat Malasada particularly on this day.
5. Hawaiian Shave Ice
We’re talking about top authentic Hawaiian dishes. Is it possible not to include Hawaiian shave ice in them? Well, certainly not!
So here it is – Hawaiian Shave Ice.
Regarded as one of the best deserts in Maui, Hawaiian shave ice is a unique treat. It is popularly also known as ‘Ice Shave.’
This dessert is made from finely shaved, snow-like ice, topped with colorful and vibrant syrups. Unlike American snow cones or crushed ice, the ice used in this dessert is shaved to a fine, fluffy consistency, allowing the syrups to soak properly.
Hawaiian Shave Ice is like a modern evolution of the traditional Japanese ‘Kakigori,’ a famous finely shave ice treat. During the 12th century, Japanese immigrants moved to Hawaii, and with this, they also brought the concept of ‘Kakigori.’ From the initial years only, local culture adapted and embraced the recipe of ‘Kakigori.’ Over time, local chefs experimented with its recipe, resulting in the distinct and vibrant version known as ‘Hawaiian Shaved Ice.’
