August 2024 marks a solemn milestone for the people of Maui—a year since the devastating 2023 Maui Wildfires swept through our beloved island, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. For many, the memories are still vivid: the relentless flames, the loss of homes, the displaced communities, and the heartache of seeing cherished landscapes reduced to ash.
August 8, 2024: The people of Maui came together in unity and solidarity on Thursday morning to honor the memory of those lost and the resilience of the survivors. Communities across Maui organized the remembrance ceremonies in their own ways. In Lahaina, many canoe paddlers, boat riders, and surfers made their way into the ocean waters off Hanaka‘ō‘ō Beach Park to remember the first anniversary of Hawaii’s deadliest wildfire of this century. The county hosted a ‘Paddle-Out’ gathering (from 9 am to 2:30 pm), which is an ancient Hawaiian ritual performed in honor of loved ones. Moreover, The Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety also honored the innocent lives lost during the 2023 Maui Wildfires.
But out of the ashes, Maui has also witnessed an inspiring story of resilience, community, and rebirth. A moment of silence lasting 102 seconds was performed at 2:55 pm to pay tribute to the lost lives and the resilience of the survivors.

Earlier this month, Governor Josh Green also ordered that the U.S. and Hawaii state flags be lowered to half-staff (from sunrise on Thursday to sunset on Monday) to pay a solemn tribute to those who lost lives in the 2023 Maui Wildfires. Eventually, on August 8, 2024, the flags were flown at half-staff at the Hawaii State Capital, all state offices and agencies, and the Hawaii National Guard.
As we mark this poignant anniversary, Stardust Hawaii also wants to pay tribute to Maui’s spirit—the strength of its people, the beauty of its recovery, and the enduring love that binds us all together.
The Worst Natural Disaster in Hawaii’s History?
The 2023 Maui wildfire is the fifth deadliest wildfire in United States history. Last year, Governor Josh Green referred to it as the ‘worst natural disaster’ in Hawaii’s history. As per the official sources, 102 people lost their lives in this wildfire. More than 2,200 structures (out of which 96% were residential) were completely destroyed. A renowned catastrophe modeling company, Karen Clark & Co., projected the loss of $3.2 billion worth of insured property.
According to ‘The Maui Humane Society,’ around 3,000 animals from Lahaina went missing after the fires. This deadliest wildfire in 2023 burned an estimated 2,170 acres of land.
Fast-forward to 2024, the destruction caused by the 2023 Maui Wildfires still resonates deeply with the people of Maui. The echoes of this tragic event are still being felt in every corner of the island, from the scorched landscapes to the heartache of displaced communities. Yet, PEOPLE OF MAUI today stand strong while their spirit remains unyielding, embodying the strength and resilience that have long defined their identity.
August 2024 marks the one-year anniversary of the 2023 Maui wildfires. In this time of remembrance, the islanders draw inspiration from the wisdom of their ancestors and their message of staying strong in every condition.
Famous traditional Hawaiian sayings, such as “E mālama i ka ʻāina, e mālama i ka ʻohana, e mālama i ke kanaka,” convey the message of strength and resilience among Maui’s residents.

To pay respect, Stardust Hawaii wants to recite a few words,
A Poem for Maui
In the heart of the night, where flames took their toll,
Maui skies wept sorrow as shadow unrolled.
Through the ashes and smoke, where hope seemed to fade,
We remember the lives that were lost in the blaze.
Remember! That Lahaina’s grand Banyan Tree, so ancient and wise,
Stood stoic and tall underneath the scorched, fiery skies.
Its branches, once strong, now charred and askew,
Yet, it whispers the songs of strength in the wind’s gentle hue.
The land bore its wounds where the wildfires had flown,
The flora and fauna, in grief, had bemoaned.
Today, from the ashes, green heads bravely rise,
Becoming a testament
To nature’s enduring ties.
Our beloved animals fled through the smoke, hearts full of fright,
In search of a safe oasis from the merciless night.
The oceans and forests, which are the identity of our existence
Scarred by the flame, challenging our persistence
To the resilient survivors who faced the darkest despair,
Your bravery and strength are the beacon that glows through the air.
Maui, oh Maui, though you’ve felt such deep pain,
Your spirit, like the Banyan, will rise once again.
Aloha, everyone! Hold fast to each other; let’s navigate through,
For in unity and courage, great strength is renewed.
With each dawn that breaks and each star that does gleam,
Stay strong, dear Maui, as we will surely redeem.
